DUTCH ROLL

Aircraft Motion

What is Dutch Roll?

Dutch roll is an aircraft motion consisting of an out-of-phase combination of tail-wagging yaw and rocking from side to side roll. It is a series of out-of-phase turns when the aircraft rolls in one direction and yaws in the other. Dutch roll occurs when an airplane's lateral stability is good but its positive directional stability is inadequate.

Dutch roll is a series of decreasing oscillations on both the rolling and yawing axes. As the plane tries to stabilize itself on both axes, the plane will continue to oscillate until the oscillations die out.

Dutch roll can be a problem for aircraft, especially during takeoff and landing. It can make the aircraft difficult to control and can lead to accidents.
