WEB GRAND ISLAND & HASTINGS, Neb. — Two Tri-City mayors say they're honored to be on the short list for a new advanced nuclear program.

Energy leaders announced a new partnership for the development of the country's first advanced nuclear reactor. Energy Northwest is the partner in two projects picked for a new Department of Energy program to develop advanced nuclear technology.

What could be the nation's first commercial advanced nuclear power reactor would be built in Washington state under an agreement announced Wednesday by the U.S. Department of Energy and Energy Northwest.

According to TRIDEC Vice President Gary Petersen, the Tri-Cities is one of five possible site locations for a new advanced nuclear reactor.

The mayors of Grand Island and Hastings say they're excited about the potential for new jobs and economic development that the program could bring to their communities.

The program is designed to accelerate the development and deployment of advanced nuclear technologies. These technologies have the potential to provide clean, safe, and affordable energy for the future.
