A History of Mother's Day
Mother's Day is celebrated on various dates in many parts of the world. Although the origins of the holiday date back to ancient times, the modern holiday as we know it was first celebrated in the United States in 1908. Anna Jarvis, a Philadelphia woman, began a campaign to establish a national Mother's Day after her mother's death in 1905. She chose the second Sunday in May as the holiday date because it was the anniversary of her mother's death.
Mother's Day was officially recognized by the U.S. Congress in 1914. In 1976, President Gerald Ford made Mother's Day a permanent national holiday. Today, Mother's Day is celebrated in the United States, Canada, and many other countries around the world.
